A small sports car Honda once built and sold. Its starting point was Soichiro Honda's fierce opposition to the auto industry reorganization plan put forward by the Ministry of International Trade and Industry, and his instruction to develop a four-wheeled vehicle before the plan took effect; the Sports 500 shown at the All Japan Motor Show went on sale as the S500. A two-door open car with a water-cooled inline-four DOHC of 531 cc, it had an extremely short production and sales period, because its successor, the S600, went on sale only months later.
