Story

The final generation, which switched the base car to the Galant Fortis, the engine from the 4G63 to the aluminum-block 4B11, and the four-wheel drive to the integrated-control S-AWC. It was the first in the series to be a catalog model not limited by period or number of units.

Stories

01

A new engine that shares little more than the water pump

The Evo X dropped the 4G63, used since the Evo I, and carried a newly developed four-cylinder DOHC turbo. According to Kato, who was in charge of engine development, this engine is based on the Galant Fortis's four-cylinder, but in practice about the only part they share is the water pump, making it an almost dedicated engine. The aluminum die-cast block alone saved about 12 kg, and a rear-exhaust layout tidied up the intake and exhaust and also improved weight balance.

02

The "Lan-Evo XX" that never was

Nakaya could be directly involved in Lan-Evo development only up to around the early Evo X models. He did not want it to end with the Evo X, and envisioned evolving it a little every year all the way to a "Lan-Evo XX". He meant to refine body stiffness and lightness, the suspension and the four-wheel-drive control, and also to bring back to the production car the "S-Tai control" he had created himself in Super Taikyu. There was also a plan to give the MT cars alone 320 PS, but it was shelved in the downturn brought on by the Lehman shock, and output stayed at 300 PS. With that, the plan for Nakaya to be involved in development came to an end, and the Lan-Evo series ended with the X Final Edition.
