Developed in response to the policy for promoting passenger car ownership presented by the Ministry of International Trade and Industry. The passenger car that became the origin of the Subaru brand, it had a forced air-cooled two-stroke twin of 356 cc driving the rear wheels, weighed 385 kg and reached a top speed of 83 km/h with four aboard. Its cute shape earned it the nickname tentomushi, ladybug. It was built for about 12 years without a major model change until it handed over to the R-2.
