The first generation went on sale as the first luxury personal car Toyota had made. The name means a top-class glider in English. Its cabin had a digital speedometer and microcomputer-controlled automatic air conditioning, making it a symbol of the arrival of electronics in cars, and it set off a prestige specialty car boom in Japan. For the third generation, the body was made a size larger than the previous model so that it could join the lineup of Lexus, the premium brand launched in America, and enter the luxury coupe market. With the start of Lexus brand sales in Japan, it moved over to become the Lexus SC430 and went out of sale.
