Japan's first mass-produced front-wheel-drive passenger car. Developed to enter the small car market, it was the first car to carry SUBARU BOXER, the horizontally opposed engine. The engine was mounted longitudinally with the gearbox and differential behind it, a layout that gave a surprisingly spacious cabin for its body size. With a low-slung horizontally opposed engine at the front, it had excellent traction on snowy roads and the like. As the successor to the SUBARU 1000, regarded as a classic, the first-generation Leone went on sale, starting with the coupe.
