Overview
Altezza means nobility in Italian. It was developed as a rear-wheel-drive sports sedan, a kind of car that had been missing in Japan for some time, aiming for the pleasure of controlling and driving it. The wheelbase of the Progres platform was shortened by 110 mm, and heavy items such as the front-midship engine, the battery and the fuel tank were drawn toward the center of the car for crisp handling. It won the Japan Car of the Year award. The Altezza Gita with a wagon body was added later, and the Altezza then moved over to the Lexus brand as the IS.
