The name, Midship Runabout-Sports, means a small car with a midship engine. It corresponds to the third generation of the MR2; for the Japanese market the name was changed to MR-S, while export markets kept the name MR2. Designed from the start as a lightweight sports car, it was trimmed to under one tonne, putting nimble handling ahead of power. It was built by Central Motors, and the limited-edition VM180 Zagato was added later.
