The name means little star in English. It began as the Publica Starlet, a new model for young buyers developed as an upscale version of the Publica series. The Publica and the Publica Starlet were later merged, and it became independent as the Starlet, a three- and five-door two-box hatchback. With the third generation the drive layout changed from rear-wheel to front-wheel drive. With the arrival of the Vitz, production that had lasted about a quarter of a century came to an end.
