The name, Midship Runabout 2 Seater, means a small two-seat car with a midship engine. It was the first midship-engined car among Japanese compact passenger cars, and it won the Japan Car of the Year award. It was developed in response to the new demand for a sporty commuter that GM had set out to stir with the Pontiac Fiero, so attention was paid to everyday practicality. It moved on to a second generation, and the MR-S, which corresponds to a third generation, followed.
