Story

It carried over the impression of its predecessor's exterior, with the design done in-house. A new platform put the weight distribution in order and greatly improved handling, and this platform later became the basis for Toyota's FR sedans. The Aristo name ended with this generation.

Eighteen months of design to carry the first generation's look forward in-house

After the first generation went on sale, development of the next model began under the internal code S160. Design work started in May under chief engineer Nakagawa, and after 18 months the production design was approved by the executive board in November. The second generation carried over its predecessor's long-nose, short-deck proportions and exterior impression, while the design was done in-house. A new platform shortened the front and rear overhangs, and moving the engine rearward put the weight distribution in order and greatly improved handling.
