A U.S. studio chosen over the team in Japan

The design of the second-generation Eclipse was decided by a competition between Mitsubishi's U.S. design studio in Southern California and Mitsubishi's design team in Japan. The U.S. team won, and it was made up of two people, Hiroshige and Vukadinović. Delighted at being chosen, Hiroshige described the Eclipse as a car of their own generation, made for that generation's market, and said it was a car they could literally design for themselves.
