1.8 Liters Was Decided from a Single Cylinder
In the second-generation Levorg, the engine grew from 1.6 liters to 1.8 liters. According to Goshima, who led the development, Subaru today decides everything from the efficiency of a single cylinder. It determines the structure and displacement of the one cylinder that produces the most torque with the best combustion efficiency, and four of those make up the total displacement. The 1.8 liters came from the single-cylinder displacement derived by considering the sweet spot of lean combustion, and he says it was not simply a matter of lengthening the stroke to gain torque. Asked whether the 1.6-liter cylinder had been optimal at the research stage of the previous generation, Goshima answered that injector performance and the swirl after fuel injection differ from generation to generation. His grandfather worked at Nakajima Aircraft and his father at Fuji Heavy Industries, making him a third-generation Subaru man, and he laughs that even his DNA is Subaru blue.
