The name Estima was made from the English word estimable. It went on sale as a minivan of a new concept, developed to enter the minivan market that was growing fast in the United States. The engine was laid over at 75 degrees under the center of the floor, combining a spacious cabin in which seven people could travel comfortably with excellent driving stability. The styling theme was an egg shape, and the advertising used the slogan tensai tamago, genius egg. This layout lasted only one generation; from the second generation on it used a conventional front engine.
