A small passenger car and small commercial vehicle built and sold by Toyota, and Toyota's first popular car. Partly inspired by the national car concept, it was developed to Toyota's own requirements for a minimal practical small car. To sell it, the Publica dealer network (later Corolla dealers) was created as a new network after the existing Toyota and Toyopet dealers. The passenger models went out of sale with the arrival of the second-generation Starlet, while the pickup alone stayed on sale for years afterward. It is the origin of Toyota's entry compact cars, continued by the Starlet, the Vitz and the Yaris. The name combines PUBLIC and CAR, and was chosen from entries submitted by the public.
