After the second Japan Grand Prix, Toyota began developing a high-performance gran turismo with the cooperation of Yamaha Motor, and showed a prototype at the Tokyo Motor Show. Beneath an in-house-designed coupe body with an extremely low roofline sat an X-shaped backbone frame. The engine was a two-liter inline-six DOHC, the suspension was four-wheel independent with double wishbones and coils, the brakes were discs at all four wheels, and the wheels were magnesium alloy all round, a line-up of firsts for a Japanese production car. Before it went on sale it took on speed record attempts, setting three world records and thirteen new international records.
