Overview

A model developed from the Legacy with the 2.5-liter horizontally opposed engine, given all-weather tires, 200 mm of ground clearance and a rugged-taste interior and exterior. It went on sale in North America as the Outback and in Japan under the name Legacy Grand Wagon. It was introduced as a car in a new category, the SUW (Sport Utility Wagon), and although sales in the target North American market were poor at first, they turned strong within about a year, and it became one of Subaru's main models in North America. In Japan the second generation was sold as the Legacy Lancaster and the third onward as the Outback and the Legacy Outback, and its sale in Japan ended with the sixth generation.
