"A tradition cannot be founded if you reject the first generation"
Development of the second generation began under the internal code 250T after the first generation went on sale around the world. Because the first generation was so well received and customer satisfaction was high, chief engineer Kazuo Okamoto made carrying its qualities over to the successor one of his main goals, saying that "a tradition cannot be founded if you reject the first generation." The exterior refined and followed the impression of the first generation, and the wheelbase was lengthened to give more room in the rear seat.
