Respect, not imitation

For the design, Uchiyama took his cue from the spirit in which his predecessors had made the first Alto. He thought about the joy users felt when a first-generation Alto arrived at their home, and rather than design for design's sake, such as adding character lines needlessly, he kept the design simple and clean. He added just a little playfulness at the front, shaping the area around the headlights on the motif of eyeglasses to give it a touch of a strong gaze. He says it is not a copy of the first generation, but an expression of his predecessors' work, done with respect and adapted to today.
