The Impreza, which debuted as a new upper-class popular car, was also developed with the WRC challenge in mind, and its WRX appeared as a sedan with a 2.0-liter BOXER turbo. In the second generation the sedan took WRX as its series name and was developed with its own packaging. With a minor change of the third-generation Impreza, the Impreza name was dropped and it became a standalone model, the Subaru WRX STI. It later became independent from the Impreza series, moving to the WRX series made up of the WRX S4 and WRX STI.
