Born as a genuine cross-country four-wheel-drive vehicle combining off-road ability and reliability with car-like comfort. The name comes from the Pajero cat, a wild cat living in Patagonia. It entered the Dakar Rally from the year after the first generation's launch, taking 12 overall wins in total, including seven in a row. In Japan it led the RV boom, and it became Mitsubishi's representative model, loved in more than 170 countries and regions. Production for the Japanese market ended, then production for export also ended, closing a history of 39 years. A new model, fully changed as a cross-country SUV, was later unveiled to the world.
