The first generation went on sale as a compact car that drives the way a SUBARU should. It was positioned as a mid-range car filling the gap between the Legacy and kei cars. The name is a coinage from the English impresa, meaning a crest or a maxim, carrying the wish to give a fresh impression. The first generation gained popularity by offering the WRX, developed to win in the WRC, and a sport wagon also aimed at women. As a standard model delivering peace of mind and enjoyment, it has kept adopting the latest technology, and the sixth generation is the current model.
