Launched as a new model in the Corona series, positioned between the Crown and the Corona. Aimed at Corona owners looking to move up, it was named following a method often used for model changes and grade changes of British cars, and the II carries the meanings of the second generation of the Corona and an upper-class Corona. From the fifth generation the Corona name was dropped and it became the Mark II. The ninth generation was the final model, and its successor, the Mark X, went on sale later.
